Start with where the furniture is now
A bulky-waste collection and an inside furniture pickup can solve different parts of the same problem. Before comparing prices, ask who will take the item from its current location to the truck. A collection quote for a couch already outside does not answer how it will leave an upstairs room.
Write down each item, its condition and its current room. Decide whether you can arrange the required carrying help or need that work included. That single distinction often makes the useful options clearer than searching for the lowest advertised starting price.
What Portland's garbage-company option covers
Portland's guidance says residents of houses through fourplexes can arrange oversized-item curbside collection with their garbage company. Request the price and date from that provider. Renters should work through the landlord, and apartment residents should ask management about large-item disposal arrangements.
The City advises calling at least a week ahead and setting items out only on the scheduled day. Follow the provider's actual placement instructions. These Portland arrangements should not be assumed to apply unchanged in Vancouver, Woodburn or another city.
Compare the work in each quote
Use the same item list for both inquiries. Ask about condition restrictions, repeated pieces and anything with unusual weight or handling needs. Confirm the complete charge rather than multiplying a starting price by the number of items yourself.
| Question | Arranged bulky-waste collection | Full-service removal |
|---|---|---|
| Who carries it outside? | Confirm staging requirements and arrange carrying separately if needed | Ask for carrying from the item's current room |
| When does it leave? | Get the provider's confirmed collection date | Check available arrival windows and explain any completion deadline |
| What is included? | Confirm each accepted item and the total charge | Confirm the full load, carrying, handling and disposal scope |
| What if the load changes? | Tell the provider before collection | Have added or removed items reflected in the approved estimate |
When carrying help changes the decision
If furniture is heavy, upstairs or behind a difficult turn, leave it in place while you ask about removal. Describe the route and send current photos when useful. Include the sleeper mechanism in a sofa, separate sectional modules, detached parts and any other pieces that must leave with it.
JunkPDX can review carrying, loading and hauling of approved items at a free onsite estimate. You approve the complete price before loading. Photos can support a preliminary range, while the final quote depends on the actual items, access, weight and handling needs.
Choose the collection that fits your actual deadline
For a move-out or replacement delivery, work backward from when the room must be clear. Include any carrying appointment, collection, cleaning and final check. An arrival window is not a promised finish time, and neither option should be booked around an assumed completion time.
If a useful item has a confirmed recipient, keep that collection separate from the disposal list. Whichever route you choose, give the collector an accurate final inventory and protect nearby belongings that stay.
- Confirm who handles the entire carry.
- Get acceptance and the total charge for every piece.
- Agree on placement and access before moving items.
- Leave time between removal and the next appointment.
