Empty each box before deciding where it goes
A furniture delivery can leave a room full of boxes even when the furniture itself fits perfectly. Start by checking for hardware, instructions, small parts and anything you may need for a return. Keep the packaging required by your seller until you have checked the product and return arrangements.
Then separate cardboard, paper cushioning, foam and plastic film. A cardboard box filled with foam is a mixed pile, rather than ready-to-collect cardboard. Sorting first makes it easier to choose between normal collection, a confirmed drop-off and a paid removal visit.
Use the rules for each material
This table summarizes City of Portland collection guidance checked October 24, 2026. Keep accepted recyclables empty, dry and loose in the bin. A recycling symbol by itself does not establish curbside acceptance.
| Packaging | Portland collection route | Before setting it out |
|---|---|---|
| Plain cardboard boxes | Blue recycling bin | Empty and flatten; remove loose packing materials. |
| All-paper or cardboard envelopes | Blue recycling bin | Check for plastic padding or coatings first. |
| Plastic-padded mailers | Garbage | Paper on the outside does not make plastic-lined mailers recyclable. |
| Bubble wrap and stretchy plastic film | Keep out of the blue bin | Reuse, confirm a separate collection option, or use garbage. |
| Foam blocks and packing peanuts | Keep out of the blue bin | Confirm a specialist option for the exact material, or use garbage; no packing peanuts in compost. |

Check whether regular collection can handle the pile
Flatten boxes before judging the size of the job. Portland allows extra flattened cardboard taped into one bundle beside the blue bin, no larger than three feet in any direction. Keep foam and film out of that bundle. Follow your collector's placement instructions and keep building access clear.
At an apartment, ask management about the shared recycling area before leaving oversized boxes beside a container. A commercial receiving area may have its own collection arrangements. If you live in Canby, Wilsonville, Woodburn or another nearby community, confirm your own collection rules rather than assuming Portland's set-out instructions apply.
Confirm a drop-off before making the trip
Metro's Find a Recycler tool provides item-specific disposal guidance and nearby options. Search for the material itself, such as foam packaging or plastic film, rather than simply searching for packaging. Check current acceptance, condition requirements, quantity limits and charges with the receiving location before loading your vehicle.
For a Vancouver or Clark County address, use the county's Recycling A–Z tool for local options. Keep Portland's blue-bin instructions separate from Washington guidance. If a material is unclear, photograph it and ask the relevant program before mixing it into a recyclable pile.
When a paid pickup may be useful
A small stack of clean cardboard may fit your existing collection. Paid pickup may be useful when there is a large mixed pile, bulky discarded furniture alongside it, difficult carrying access or a deadline before your next collection. Compare the complete work you need: sorting, carrying, loading and hauling.
Show wooden crates, pallets, straps and any damaged goods separately from the packaging. Tell JunkPDX what is inside bags and boxes, and confirm accepted materials before the visit. A hauling appointment does not guarantee that every packaging material will be recycled. Ask about the proposed handling when that affects your decision.
Prepare the remaining load for an estimate
Send photos after anything being reused or collected elsewhere has left. Include the whole remaining pile and the route from its current location to truck parking. Photos support a rough range; JunkPDX provides a free, no-obligation onsite estimate and you approve the full price before loading.
