Step-by-step
A practical plan for the job.
- 1
Separate an item mismatch from a condition problem
Ask whether the organization declined the piece because of current needs, size, style, missing parts or damage. That distinction guides the next step. A large desk that does not fit one program's needs is different from an upholstered chair with pest concerns; neither should be advertised with an inaccurate description.
- 2
Give usable items one realistic backup route
If the furniture is safe and useful, try a recipient whose requirements fit or offer a direct gift with an honest description. Decide how long you can wait and who will collect it. Repeated no-shows can consume the time needed for a move-out, so make the fallback plan before the final day.
- 3
Compare collection with self-haul
Ask your garbage provider about bulky-item service and check Metro's disposal search for a destination that accepts the material. Confirm the total charge, hours, unloading requirements and any condition restrictions. Self-haul also means arranging a suitable vehicle, secure loading and enough help to move the furniture safely.
- 4
Request a full-service quote when carrying is the obstacle
Send JunkPDX photos of the furniture and the complete exit route. Include sleeper mechanisms, reclining sections, stairs and long carries. List any extra pieces that also need to leave so the quote can cover the whole approved scope. Final pricing is confirmed onsite before loading.
- 5
Keep condition concerns visible
Share the reason for rejection with the next collector, particularly moisture, pests or contamination. Do not mix questionable pieces into a clean donation pile or move them through the home without a reviewed handling plan. Ordinary pickup may not cover every condition; get that answer before scheduling.
- 6
Close out the removal list
Identify what stays, what was collected and what still needs to leave. Check drawers and storage compartments, then have an authorized person approve the remaining scope. For a property handoff, allow time after collection for cleaning and a final walkthrough instead of treating the arrival window as the completion deadline.
