What condition does furniture need to be in for donation?
Treat donation as a request to place furniture in another home, not a way to transfer a repair or disposal problem. Check that the piece is clean, usable, complete and stable, then ask the receiving organization about its specific requirements. Acceptance also depends on the item category and current capacity. Good condition alone does not guarantee acceptance or free pickup.

Inspect before cleaning or moving the piece
Look under cushions, behind the item and around the legs and joints. Note loose parts, cracked supports, water damage and upholstery wear. Stop and disclose signs of pests or contamination before handling or transport. Do not hide defects with a cover or by photographing only the best-looking side.

Test the ordinary functions
Check whether drawers open, doors close, table legs remain stable and any reclining mechanism works. Count removable leaves, cushions, shelves, screws and other parts that belong with the furniture. Put small hardware in a labeled bag and explain anything missing in the donation request.

Match the item to the actual donation list
Describe the type of furniture precisely: a standard sofa, sleeper sofa, sectional, desk or large entertainment center may have different acceptance rules. The charity's published list and current needs are the place to start. Ask about dimensions and weight rather than assuming every item in the broad furniture category qualifies.

Photograph condition and pickup access
Take a full view, a side or rear view, close-ups of any damage and a picture showing the size with a tape measure. Include the stairs, hallway turns, elevator and available vehicle access if requesting collection. Good photos reduce uncertainty but do not replace the collector's final inspection.

Keep the donation dry and separate
Leave it protected while awaiting a confirmed arrangement. Label donated pieces separately from furniture you are keeping and items approved for paid removal. Empty drawers and storage compartments so documents, photographs or small valuables do not leave accidentally.

Agree on what happens if it is not accepted
Ask when the final acceptance decision happens and whether declined pieces remain with you. Confirm any pickup fee and cancellation terms directly. If a move or property handoff is approaching, keep time for a backup collection rather than assuming the donation request finishes the job.

You don’t need to choose a truck size. Show us what goes. We’ll measure the load. Descriptions and photos help us plan, but are not a final quote. Price depends on truck space, weight, access, labor and special disposal. You approve the total before loading.
Can stained furniture be donated after I clean it?
Ask the organization about the actual remaining condition and share updated photos. Cleaning does not automatically make an item acceptable. Do not promise that odors, moisture or pest issues have been resolved unless you know that they have.
Can I donate a sleeper sofa or sectional?
Check the receiving organization's current item list and size limits before arranging transport. These pieces can be bulky and heavy, and their acceptance may differ from a standard sofa.
Will a donation pickup include moving furniture downstairs?
Confirm the collection provider's access and carrying rules before booking. Explain the floor and stairs and request the full quote. Do not assume donation pickup includes the same labor as a full-service hauling appointment.
