Step-by-step
A practical plan for the job.
- 1
Define contents removal before sorting
List what you want removed: stored boxes, empty suitcases, decorations or loose furniture. Mark shelving and fixtures that stay. If the project also involves insulation, roof damage or demolition, arrange that work separately; a contents cleanout does not include opening walls or removing building materials.
- 2
Show how the attic is reached
Photograph the access opening, stairs or pull-down ladder from a safe position. Describe low headroom, limited lighting and any uncertainty about the walking surface. Do not enter an area with unknown support just to obtain photos. Access needs review before anyone assumes the contents can be carried out.
- 3
Separate keepsakes and undecided boxes
Identify family photos, documents, holiday items and anything belonging to someone else. Use clear labels and a written keep list. If boxes cannot be inspected safely, describe them as undecided and discuss a sorting plan; the crew should not make disposal decisions for sealed, unmarked belongings.
- 4
Document the amount and condition
Send safe overview photos, an approximate box count and a list of bulky pieces. Mention moisture, droppings, pests, damaged containers or unusual odors before the visit. Leave disturbed insulation and suspect material alone. Conditions that need specialist assessment must be resolved before ordinary handling can proceed.
- 5
Clear the route below the access
Move ordinary personal belongings away from the hatch landing and hallway, without bringing attic contents down yourself. Show tight turns, stairs to the exterior and parking access. Keep children and pets away from the work route. The crew reviews how approved items can pass through the opening safely.
- 6
Approve the scope and check what remains
At the free onsite estimate, confirm which contents leave and what access work is included before approving the final price. After removal, compare the cleared area with the keep list. Contents pickup does not include structural certification, leak repairs or an insulation inspection.
