How to Clean Out a Storage Unit in Portland

Finish your Portland storage cleanout before access ends: confirm facility requirements, separate keeps from removals and photograph the full unit. Arrange unlocking and loading access, then complete the facility's inspection and account closeout after the approved contents leave.

Before you plan the job

How do I plan a storage unit cleanout before move-out?

Start with the facility's notice, access and inspection requirements. Mark what stays, check boxes for valuables and send photos showing the full unit plus stairs or elevators. Arrange an authorized contact to unlock the unit and approve the onsite hauling price. After removal, complete the facility's own lock, inspection and account-closeout steps; a hauling appointment does not cancel your rental.

Your project notes

Make your storage-unit cleanout plan

Keep the facility requirements and removal list together. Copy these notes when asking the crew to review the job, and confirm the facility's move-out steps directly with its manager.

Nothing is sent from this worksheet. Notes stay on this page until you leave or reload it; copy them before you go. This does not book an appointment.

Book a Free Estimate

Step-by-step

A practical plan for the job.

  1. 1

    Confirm the facility's move-out requirements

Ask when the unit must be empty, what notice the facility requires, how the final inspection works and when access ends. Share the actual deadline with the crew. For a standard booking, a receipt marked Booking confirmed reserves your estimate arrival window. Larger projects or requests marked for review need a crew-confirmed plan. The estimate visit does not set the full cleanout duration or cancel your storage agreement.

  2. 2

    Make three clear groups

Identify belongings you are keeping, items approved for removal and anything undecided. Check boxes for documents, photos and valuables before releasing them. Label retained items and tell the crew if those items block access to the junk. Do not assume unmarked boxes can leave. If you plan to sell or donate anything, set a collection cutoff before move-out so uncollected items do not delay the cleanout.

  3. 3

Photograph the contents and the route

Take doorway photos and additional views from safe positions. List heavy pieces, dense boxes and anything hidden behind the first row. Include the unit number, floor, stairs or elevator, hallway turns and the distance to loading. Unit dimensions alone do not show the load volume or labor.

  4. 4

    Arrange entry and loading access

Confirm gate hours, the entry process, elevator reservations, vehicle restrictions and where a hauling truck may park. Tell us who will unlock the unit and approve the onsite quote. Do not stage contents in a hallway or shared lane without the facility's permission.

  5. 5

    Approve the whole removal scope

Show every included item during the free onsite estimate. Ask whether the quote covers the complete unit or a defined phase, and review any special handling or extra loads before work begins. Photos support a preliminary range; you approve the final onsite price before loading.

  6. 6

    Finish the facility handoff

Walk the unit with the crew after approved contents are removed. Check corners and shelving for missed items, and confirm that belongings staying remain. Request any needed completion photos in advance. Complete the facility's inspection, lock and account-closeout steps yourself; hauling alone does not close the rental account.

What affects cost

No truck-size guess required.

You don’t need to choose a truck size. Show us what goes. We’ll measure the load. Descriptions and photos help us plan, but are not a final quote. Household junk is priced by the space it takes up in our truck or trailer. Unusually heavy items, certain debris types, difficult access or special disposal may add charges. You approve the total before loading.

How Pricing Works

Common questions

Before you schedule.

Can a storage unit be emptied in one visit?

It depends on the packed contents, carrying access, truck capacity and crew availability. Send photos and the facility deadline so the complete scope can be reviewed. A larger unit or difficult access may require several loads or visits.

Do I have to be at the unit?

Identify an authorized contact who can arrange access, confirm what may leave and approve the final onsite price. If you will be away, discuss how that approval and the final walkthrough will happen before scheduling.

Can you help if I want to keep some of the contents?

Yes. Mark the items that stay and tell us about anything that must be moved to reach the junk. Transporting retained belongings is a separate need; do not include them in the disposal pile.

Does emptying the unit stop my storage charges?

The facility determines its account and move-out requirements. Confirm the deadline, inspection and closure steps directly with the manager. JunkPDX removes the approved contents and does not cancel the storage agreement.
