Living at Home During a Renovation: A Portland Planning Checklist

Plan daily life during a Portland home renovation: discuss live-in arrangements, set up essentials, relocate work routines and unpack completed rooms in phases.

Confirm whether living at home is practical

Living at home during renovation requires a plan for ordinary days: making breakfast, answering work calls, finding clean clothes and getting everyone out the door. Before building that plan, ask your contractor whether staying in the home is practical for the proposed work and which stages might require another arrangement. An available spare bedroom alone does not answer that question.

Discuss working hours, access to the kitchen and bathroom, expected service interruptions and when plans could change. Keep a temporary housing option in mind if the agreed arrangement stops working. Use the separate room-preparation guide for clearing the work area, access routes and debris planning.

Prepare the work area before renovation

Build a temporary kitchen around real meals

If the kitchen is affected, write down a realistic week of meals before choosing what stays accessible. Set aside a small selection of dishes, food containers and pantry basics. Confirm with the contractor where a temporary setup can go and which existing facilities will remain available; agree on arrangements before relocating appliances.

Plan grocery quantities around the storage you actually have. Include space for lunch packing, washing up and everyday waste. If excess unwanted furniture occupies the room you need for this setup, JunkPDX can review an agreed contents-removal list before you move daily essentials into place.

Move the work routine before the first noisy day

A laptop on the dining table may work for email and fail for a full day of meetings. Test the proposed workspace with your usual equipment, internet connection and call schedule. Ask which days are likely to involve disruptive work, while allowing for schedule changes.

Keep a portable work kit with your computer, charger, headphones and essential paperwork. Identify an offsite place you can use when needed, and check its hours before relying on it. Tell colleagues about your availability and avoid promising uninterrupted calls from a room beside the project.

Store belongings in the order you will need them

Separate daily essentials from items needed occasionally and belongings that can stay packed until completion. Label boxes with contents and a simple number, then record their location in a shared phone note. Put likely-needed boxes where you can retrieve them without unpacking everything else.

Plan for Portland weather when choosing storage and moving boxes between locations. Keep belongings in suitable dry storage, and avoid making an uncovered outdoor area your only overflow plan. Set aside a compact essentials kit for each person, including clothes, toiletries and chargers.

Give the household one shared weekly plan

Choose one household contact for contractor updates, then share changes with everyone who lives there. A brief weekly check-in helps coordinate work calls, meals, laundry, school routines and any nights away. Keep decisions in one shared note instead of several message threads.

  • Confirm the coming week's work and any changes to live-in arrangements.
  • List when kitchen, bathroom or laundry access may change.
  • Assign meal planning and replenishing everyday supplies.
  • Update the offsite work or overnight plan when needed.

Return to finished rooms in phases

Ask the contractor when each room is ready for household use and what follow-up work remains before bringing belongings back. Return essentials first, then furniture and less-used boxes. Keep your temporary setup available until the replacement routine works for an ordinary day.

Update the storage list as boxes return. Decide where each item belongs in the finished layout instead of recreating every old storage problem. If you need to move out for part of the project, plan that change as a separate temporary housing and belongings-storage arrangement.
