What should I check before donating an old suitcase?
Open every compartment, remove personal information and test the handles, zippers and wheels. Describe any damage and ask a recipient if it wants the bag. A suitcase is useful only when its storage and carrying features work for the next person.

Empty the hidden spaces
Check lining pockets, expansion sections, shoe compartments and luggage tags. Remove documents, medicine, keys and trackers. Do not donate a packed suitcase without sorting it; the contents may need different destinations or include belongings you meant to keep.

Test ordinary use
Roll the suitcase a short distance, extend the handle and close the zippers without forcing them. Photograph cracked shells or torn straps. Do not describe a bag as ready for travel if a failed wheel or lock prevents normal use.

Ask a specific recipient
Use a local donation directory such as Goodwill's to identify a location, then confirm acceptance of your luggage. For a community program, ask about sizes and actual needs. Do not assume organizations serving travelers or families want every kind of used bag.

Prepare the handoff
Keep approved bags clean and dry and explain any combination-lock issue. Separate unwanted contents from the luggage itself. If a bag is headed for paid removal during a move, mark it clearly so the crew does not confuse it with packed belongings going to your new home.

Only assume repair is possible when the recipient explicitly agrees. Donation programs may not have the parts, labor or storage for a damaged bag.
Can luggage be picked up with other household items?
Include the number of bags and their contents in the approved scope. JunkPDX provides paid hauling; donating a bag does not itself arrange a free home collection.
