Identify the actual unit
Photograph the label and say whether it is a window, portable or permanently installed system. Include hoses, brackets and the remote if offering it for reuse. A built-in or split system needs a contractor plan rather than a simple loose-appliance pickup.

Check operation and recall status
Describe whether it cools, leaks or makes unusual noises. Search the model in the CPSC recall database before offering it to another household. Follow any matching manufacturer remedy instead of passing an unresolved problem to a recipient.

Arrange safe detachment
A window unit can fall when its supports are released. Have appropriate help remove it and restore the window securely before collection. Ask about preparation before lifting; do not cut cooling lines or open the refrigerant system to reduce the weight.

Confirm an appliance destination
Tell the recycler or hauler the model, condition and location. Ask about refrigerant-related charges and any required staging. For a usable unit, get item-specific donation approval first and keep its venting accessories together so it can be used again.
