Identify tank and energy type
Send the model label, approximate dimensions and a photo of the full installation. Distinguish a conventional tank, tankless unit and heat-pump water heater. Include stairs, platforms, straps and narrow utility-room doors in the same photo set.

Assign preparation to the installer
Confirm who handles gas, electrical, plumbing, venting and drainage work. Do not assume a hauling crew provides those trades. Schedule removal after the installer has declared the old unit ready, and keep the replacement work area available.

Account for residual weight
An old tank may be heavier than expected even after preparation. Let the collector assess it instead of trying to roll it down stairs. Mention corrosion, damaged feet and any evidence that the outer shell will not support ordinary handling.

Get a complete haul-away quote
Ask whether the price covers the old unit, access and any approved extra debris. A heat-pump model has additional components that should be disclosed. Do not promise scrap income or donation acceptance as a way to offset the pickup cost.
