How the Donation and Recycling Process Works

Before a Portland-area cleanout, separate the items you want to keep from the items you authorize JunkPDX to remove. You do not need to decide every disposal destination yourself. Condition, material and the receiving facility's current rules determine which removed items can be reused, recycled or disposed of.

Who should I call to get rid of old furniture in Portland?

Call JunkPDX at (971) 325-2491 when you need a crew to carry, load and haul away approved furniture. We provide a free onsite estimate for paid removal; you approve the price before loading. If you can arrange donation or curbside collection yourself, compare those options first.

• Donation or reuse: for clean, complete items, use Metro's Find a Recycler to look for item-specific donation or recycling options. Confirm condition requirements, acceptance and transport arrangements with the receiving organization.
• Garbage-company pickup: in the City of Portland, houses, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes can arrange bulky-item curbside collection through their garbage company. Ask for the price and scheduled day. Apartment residents should ask the property manager; renters should coordinate with the landlord. Keep items off the curb until the scheduled day. • Full-service removal: choose JunkPDX furniture removal for carrying and loading from inside, multiple bulky items or a mixed cleanout. Tell us about stairs, elevators and parking so the estimate covers the actual work. If everything is already outside, review our curbside pickup option.

Is donation pickup the same as junk removal?

No. A donation organization decides which items it will accept. JunkPDX is a paid hauling service, including when usable items may be routed toward donation. A free estimate is not a free removal service. Donation acceptance, a particular destination and a donation receipt are not guaranteed.

Prepare three groups before the walkthrough

• Keep: documents, valuables, medications, family keepsakes and anything still awaiting a decision. Move these away from the removal area or label them clearly.
• Potentially reusable: clean, complete furniture and household items. Keep them dry and separate from wet or dirty debris. Send photos if donation is a priority.
• Removal and review: damaged furniture, mixed clutter and project debris. Identify appliances, mattresses, electronics, heavy material and anything with liquids or unusual contamination separately.

A charity makes its own acceptance decision. An item that looks usable may be declined because of condition, size, demand or available space. If a specific donation destination or receipt is essential, arrange that requirement before authorizing pickup; neither is automatic.

Show the crew the whole load

Include every room, storage area and outdoor pile in the estimate. Explain which items may leave and which must stay. For apartments or business properties, provide the unit or suite, elevator arrangements, loading rules and the contact who can approve the work.

Keep restricted materials out of mixed piles

Disclose paint, chemicals, fuel, batteries, cylinders and suspect building material before the appointment. Do not put unknown liquids or hazardous materials inside ordinary junk bags. These items may require a separate provider or disposal program. Review accepted items and restrictions before adding them to the request.

Confirm expectations before pickup

Ask whether the proposed scope includes carrying items from inside, dismantling furniture, sorting and any special disposal. Do not assume that every item will be donated or recycled. For a project with reporting requirements, ask what records can be provided before service is scheduled.
