Separate the shelf from its contents
Remove books, papers, baskets and objects you intend to keep. A book donation and a furniture donation may go to different places. Avoid loading books into the shelves for transport; their weight makes the piece harder to control.

Identify wall attachments
Show brackets, anti-tip straps and screws in photos. Do not release restraints until a safe handling plan is ready. Built-in shelving is a different scope from freestanding furniture, and removal can expose wall damage that needs separate repair.

Check height and completeness
Community Warehouse lists freestanding shelves and bookcases up to six feet. Include loose shelves and their pins with any approved donation. Mention swollen panels or a separating back; a piece that stands while loaded may be unstable when moved.

Choose intact transport or disposal
Ask whether the recipient wants the bookcase assembled. If it is too fragile for reuse, explain that before pickup. Send the stair and doorway measurements so the collector can assess whether careful disassembly is needed in the room.

Can the books go with the bookcase?
List them separately. If you want the books donated, confirm their own acceptance and keep them boxed in manageable amounts; furniture acceptance does not include a promise to take every book.
