What is the first step when disposing of a freezer?
Plan what happens to the contents before arranging the move. Then identify the freezer type, allow time for defrosting and confirm an accepting destination or pickup. A freezer full of spoiled food needs a different discussion from an empty appliance.

Send a photo and dimensions, and identify a chest or upright model. Explain whether it is in a basement, garage or outbuilding. State if it still cools and disclose damaged hinges, rust or leaks.

Make a separate plan for contents
Move food you are keeping before unplugging the unit. If it contains spoiled food or an unknown mess, describe that condition when asking for service. Do not assume a standard appliance quote includes emptying or cleaning the interior.

Defrost without damaging the cabinet
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and allow enough time for ice to melt. Collect and dry water so it does not spread along the moving route. Do not chip ice with sharp tools or puncture refrigeration components.

Check the lid, doorway and stairs
A chest freezer may be wider than expected at a narrow doorway; an upright may be top-heavy. Photograph turns and steps. Keep the waiting appliance secure and inaccessible to children, and agree on staging with the collector.

Confirm the hauling scope and timing
Tell JunkPDX about the empty freezer, access and other items. Hauling is paid, the onsite estimate is free, and photos support a rough range. Approve the price before loading. Monday–Saturday windows are requested times until the crew confirms them.

Can someone collect a working freezer for free?
A private giveaway may work if a recipient agrees to the condition and transport. Confirm the plan before dismantling access or delaying another booked service.
Can I put the freezer out before collection day?
Ask for a confirmed staging instruction first. Avoid leaving an appliance unsecured or blocking a walkway while waiting for an uncertain pickup.
