Is a microwave included in Oregon’s free E-Cycles program?
Microwaves are not among the covered devices listed in DEQ’s 2026 expansion. Portland identifies separate microwave recycling options through Metro. Confirm acceptance and any fee with the destination before carrying one in.
JunkPDX provides paid hauling with free estimates for approved items. The independent programs linked here set their own prices, acceptance rules and schedules. A JunkPDX request does not arrange collection with another provider.
Say whether yours sits on a counter, hangs over a range or is built into cabinetry. Share a photo and model number. A countertop appliance is a simpler collection request than a mounted unit still attached to a wall.

Choose a destination before transporting it
Use Metro’s recycler search for a microwave-specific option. Ask whether your model and condition are accepted, how it should arrive and whether there is a fee. A location accepting TVs does not automatically accept kitchen appliances.

Arrange removal from its installation
For an over-range or built-in model, have appropriate help handle brackets, ducting and connections. Confirm the appliance is ready to lift before booking hauling. Do not assume a JunkPDX appointment includes installation or electrical work.

Prepare the whole appliance
Empty food and dishes. Secure the glass turntable and any loose rack, or tell the recipient they are missing. Leave the casing closed; internal repairs or dismantling are not part of preparing a microwave for collection.

Compare pickup with a separate trip
A single countertop microwave may be manageable to drop off once accepted. For larger loads, JunkPDX offers paid hauling with free onsite estimates. Photos support a rough range, and you approve pricing before loading. Requested Monday–Saturday windows require crew confirmation.
What affects cost
No truck-size guess required.
You don’t need to choose a truck size. Show us what goes. We’ll measure the load. Descriptions and photos help us plan, but are not a final quote. Price depends on truck space, weight, access, labor and special disposal. You approve the total before loading.
Find a recipient who accepts the model and condition. Describe missing parts and any unusual behavior honestly. Do not pass along a unit with unresolved damage as a tested working appliance.
Can the microwave go with my old stove?
Include both items in your request. Identify whether either is still installed so the estimate and preparation instructions reflect the whole job.
Does its small size guarantee free recycling?
No. Ask the receiving facility for its microwave policy. Free electronics programs cover defined device categories, and a household appliance may follow a different route.
