How do I prepare a mattress for removal in Portland?

Count the mattress, box spring, frame and every other bed piece that needs to go. Remove bedding and personal belongings, keep the mattress dry and photograph its condition and the carry route. Tell JunkPDX about moisture, pests or contamination before scheduling. You do not need to carry it outside; acceptance, handling and the final pickup price are reviewed before loading.

A practical plan for the job.

Count the complete bed set
List mattress sizes and quantities, box springs or foundations, the frame and headboard. Note adjustable bases or other unusually heavy pieces and whether the frame needs disassembly. A mattress-only photo does not show the full removal scope.

Show the current condition
Photograph stains, tears or moisture and explain any pests or contamination before anyone handles the item. If conditions change after your first photos, send an update. Do not assume an earlier rough range confirms acceptance.

Choose pickup or a receiving destination
For self-haul, confirm the receiving program’s accepted items, preparation and current hours before arranging transport. For paid pickup, share the item list and access photos. A recycling drop-off option does not mean home collection is free.

Prepare the carry route
Remove bedding, clear personal belongings from halls and arrange any elevator or loading access. Keep the mattress dry. Ask for handling instructions if its condition needs review instead of dragging it through the home or wrapping it without guidance.

What affects cost

No truck-size guess required.

You don’t need to choose a truck size. Show us what goes. We’ll measure the load. Descriptions and photos help us plan, but are not a final quote. Household junk is priced by the space it takes up in our truck or trailer. Unusually heavy items, certain debris types, difficult access or special disposal may add charges. You approve the total before loading.

What if the mattress got wet after I sent photos?

Contact the crew before arrival with updated photos, its current location and an explanation of the wetness or contamination. This can change JunkPDX’s carrying or disposal plan. Oregon program eligibility is separate from our handling review; do not rely on the original photos to confirm the pickup.

Do I have to wrap the mattress?

Usually not for an ordinary mattress pickup. Disclose pests, moisture or contamination first and follow the instructions given for your item. Do not hide its condition in bags or other packaging.

Can you remove the box spring and bed frame too?

Yes, include each piece in the request and approved quote. Tell us about disassembly, adjustable bases and extra weight so they can be reviewed with the mattress.

Is mattress recycling the same as free pickup?

No. Oregon’s program offers eligible no-cost mattress and box-spring drop-off, regardless of condition or purchase date. You still arrange transport and follow the collection site’s instructions. JunkPDX home collection is a paid service that includes the approved carrying and hauling.
